Risk factors: lessons from the European IDEFICS study

Wolfgang Ahrens is Professor for Epidemiological Methods at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Bremen since 2003. He has been deputy director of the Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology – BIPS until 2023, and head of the Department of Epidemiological Methods and Etiological Research. Wolfgang Ahrens is an epidemiologist with considerable experience in leading population-based (inter)national multi-center studies involving primary data collection. His research focuses on epidemiological methods with particular emphasis on exposure assessment and the etiology and primary prevention of non-communicable diseases, especially cancer and nutrition- and lifestyle-related disorders. He has coordinated two large European cohort studies of more than 16,000 children from eight countries, IDEFICS and I.Family, the European Policy Evaluation Network PEN and the European childhood obesity prevention project GrowH!. In addition, he was founding member of the board of scientific directors of the German National Cohort including 200,000 German residents. He has published more than 480 international peer-reviewed papers and 28 book chapters. He has (co)authored six books and edited five books. .

Maria-Christina Antoniou

Dr. Maria-Christina Antoniou, MD, is a pediatrician and pediatric endocrinologist and diabetologist. She completed her training in pediatrics and her specialization in pediatric endocrinology, diabetology and obesity in the University Hospital of Lausanne (CHUV), Switzerland. She has also obtained the University Diploma (DIU) in Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetology, from the University Paris Cité, in Paris, France. She is currently serving as a consultant at the Unit of Pediatric Endocrinology, Diabetology, and Obesity at the CHUV. She received her Doctorate in Medicine from the University of Lausanne in 2020 focusing on neonatal complications in pregnancies complicated by gestational diabetes. Her work combines clinical activity, research and undergraduate teaching. Her research focuses on three axes: Short and medium-term effects of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus on the offspring, pediatric obesity, and puberty.

Adipose Tissue Pollutants And Obesity

Dr. Jean-Philippe Antignac is engineer and PhD graduated in analytical chemistry, and a scientist belonging to the National Institute of Agronomic Research (INRA). He is since 2007 the scientific officer of LABERCA, which is a research Unit working in the areas of chemical food safety and environmental health. He is also contributing to public expertise working groups for INSERM and the French Food Safety Agency (ANSES). His competence areas are the analysis of organic chemical residues and contaminants in biological matrices for risk assessment and environmental health purposes. His specific research field is the study of endocrine disrupting chemicals from a human exposure assessment point of view. Through various collaborations he is also involved in several projects studying the relation between this human environmental chemical exposome and reproductive and developmental functions or hormono-dependent cancers. The development and application of global chemical phenotyping approaches such as metabolomic or lipidomic is another component of his research activities for identifying biomarkers and/or biological signatures associated to a given exposure or a given effect. His is author or co-author of 109 publications in international peer review journals and his current h-index is 28.

Selection of Research Supports Ongoing Research Support Constitutive Grant from Inserm and Université Paris Descartes for unit 747 As a head of an Inserm-Université Paris Descartes unit (unit 747), I receive significant yearly support from these institutions. The grant is based on the general proposal of the unit. The unit includes 5 teams (80 people), my own being the largest one and receives approximately one fourth of the unit support. The grant partially funds all our projects including those dealing with effects of dioxin in several models studied by omics technology, the interaction between pollutants, the structure of pollutant receptors as well as studies on the toxicity of alcohol and drugs. This grant represents approximately 40% of our budget. Role: Principal Investigator` Heals: FP7 EU grant (2013-2018) The aim of the project is to provide molecular and cellular mechanisms of contaminant action in the context of a consortium working on human exposome. Linda S. Birnbaum Director, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and National Toxicology Program Linda S. Birnbaum, Ph.D., is director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) of the National Institutes of Health, and the National Toxicology Program (NTP). As NIEHS and NTP director, Birnbaum oversees a budget of more than $740 million that funds biomedical research to discover how the environment influences human health and disease. The Institute also supports training, education, technology transfer, and community outreach. NIEHS currently funds more than 1,000 research grants. A board certified toxicologist, Birnbaum has served as a federal scientist for nearly 35 years. Prior to her appointment as NIEHS and NTP director in 2009, she spent 19 years at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), where she directed the largest division focusing on environmental health research. Birnbaum started her federal career with 10 years at NIEHS, first as a senior staff fellow in the National Toxicology Program, then as a principal investigator and research microbiologist, and finally as a group leader for the Institute’s Chemical Disposition Group. Birnbaum has received many awards and recognitions. In October 2010, she was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, one of the highest honors in the fields of medicine and health. She was elected to the Collegium Ramazzini and to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies of Science, and received an honorary Doctor of Science from the University of Rochester and a Distinguished Alumna Award from the University of Illinois. Other awards include 2 NIH Director’s Award, Women in Toxicology Elsevier Mentoring Award, Society of Toxicology Public Communications Award, EPA’s Health Science Achievement Award and Diversity Leadership Award, National Center for Women’s 2012 Health Policy Hero Award, Breast Cancer Fund Heroes Award, 2013 American Public Health Association Homer N. Birnbaum is also an active member of the scientific community. She was vice president of the International Union of Toxicology, the umbrella organization for toxicology societies in more than 50 countries; former president of the Society of Toxicology, the largest professional organization of toxicologists in the world; former chair of the Division of Toxicology at the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics; and former vice president of the American Aging Association. She is the author of more than 700 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and reports. Birnbaum’s own research focuses on the pharmacokinetic behavior of environmental chemicals, mechanisms of action of toxicants including endocrine disruption, and linking of real-world exposures to health effects. She is also an adjunct professor in the Gillings School of Global Public Health, the Curriculum in Toxicology, and the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, as well as in the Integrated Toxicology and Environmental Health Program at Duke University. A native of New Jersey, Birnbaum received her M.S. and Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Szilvia Bokor

Szilvia Bokor (MD, PhD) is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Paediatrics, Medical School, University of Pécs, Hungary, with specialist qualifications in paediatrics and paediatric endocrinology. Alongside her clinical work, she conducts research at the Hungarian Centre of Genomics and Bioinformatics, Szentágothai Research Centre, University of Pécs. Following her PhD, she completed postdoctoral research at the Institut Pasteur de Lille, France, where she investigated the genetic background of childhood obesity within the European HELENA (Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence) Study. Her clinical work focuses on the management of childhood obesity and endocrine disorders, while her research investigates molecular mechanisms underlying developmental programming and childhood obesity, with particular emphasis on epigenetic responses to perinatal exposures, metabolomic biomarkers, and cardiometabolic complications. Her work aims to integrate genomic and epigenetic approaches with clinical paediatric practice to improve early-life prevention and long-term management of childhood obesity and related metabolic disorders. She has participated in several national and international collaborative research programmes, including the National Laboratory on Human Reproduction (HRNL), HELENA (Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence), EARNEST (Early Nutrition Programming Project), and the IDEFICS/I.Family studies. Dr. Bokor has authored peer-reviewed original and review articles on childhood obesity, developmental programming, and epigenetic mechanisms, and is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.

Dr João Breda, PHD MBA MPH Programme Manager Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity World Health Organisation – Regional Office for Europe João Breda is a PhD in Nutritional Sciences from Porto University. He graduated in Nutritional Sciences also at Porto University. He has done his Master Degree in Public Health by the Medical Sciences Faculty of the University Nova de Lisboa and an MBA from the European University in Barcelona. Dr Breda is the Programme Manager: Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity Noncommunicable diseases and Health Promotion Division at WHO Regional Office for Europe and responsible for providing support to the 53 Member States of the WHO European Region on the implementation of the European Charter on Counteracting Obesity and the Vienna Declaration on Nutrition and Noncommunicable Diseases as well as evaluating their progress implementation. His team is leading for the largest and most comprehensive childhood obesity surveillance mechanisms globally and developing at the moment a new Food and Nutrition Action Plan and a Physical Activity Strategy for the WHO European Region. João Breda worked as a Public Health Nutritionist at the General Health Directorate in the Portuguese Ministry of Health having launched and led for several years the National Platform Against Obesity. Published in scientific journals and presented in national and international congresses, several dozens of papers and also published 22 original books. He was Researcher and Professor of Nutrition at the University Atlântica and Head of Department of the Nutritional Sciences where he developed and implemented the first Nutritional Sciences Bachelor. Her main field of research is the epidemiology of childhood obesity, body composition, nutritional determinants of obesity, treatment and prevention. In the early 80’s she published the first BMI growth charts and developed the concept of “Adiposity rebound” predicting the risk of obesity. She conducted several studies on nutrition and growth and showed that high protein and low fat intakes in early life were associated with an increased risk of developing later overweight. She participates in various research programs and teaches in Universities in France and other countries. She was the vice president of the European Childhood Obesity Group (ECOG) 2008-2010. She has published around 80 articles in main international journals and obtained 3 Awards.

The Adipose Organ: Implications For Prevention And Treatment Of Obesity

Saverio Cinti is medical doctor and full professor of anatomy in School of Medicine at University of Ancona since 1986. Actually he is Director of the Obesity Center at the same University. The main research interest is focused since 35 years on adipose tissues in relation to the medical problems of obesity and T2 diabetes. He published more than 250 papers (pub med) and his H index is 49 (Scopus Jan 2015). In 1999 published the book: The Adipose Organ. He published 14 chapters on obesity-related books. The most important observations were on the physiologic reversible reprogramming of white and brown adipocytes. White-brown reprogramming opened new perspectives for future treatment of obesity and related disorders. Most recently he discovered the white-pink reprogramming (mammary adipocytes can reversibly convert into glandular cells producing milk during pregnancy and lactation) with new perspectives in the field of breast cancer. He also discovered the cause of chronic low-grade inflammation of obese adipose tissue describing the death of adipocytes (by pyroptosis) and consequent crown-like formations (CLS) providing one pathogenetic link between obesity and T2 diabetes. In 2008 was awarded of Blaise Pascal Medal by the European Academy of Sciences and in 2013 was awarded of Wasserman Prize by the European Association for The Study of Obesity.

Karine Clément (INSERM NutriOmique) Prof Karine Clément is full professor of Nutrition, Division of Cardiometabolism, Pitié-Salpêtrière university hospital, Paris 6 Pierre et Marie Curie university, Paris. Since 2011, she is director of the Institute de CardiometAbolism and Nutrition (ICAN) dedicated to innovative Care, Research and training in the field of Cardiology and metabolic diseases. This institute aims at developing personalized medicine in the field of cardiometabolic diseases. During her MD, PhD in Endocrinology, metabolism and Nutrition, she has been involved in genetic and functional genomics aspects of human obesity. Her work led to the identification of monogenic forms of obesity (Leptin receptor and MC4R mutations) and to genetic risk factors in common obesities. Then, she performed a post-doctoral fellowship at Stanford University, CA, USA where she acquired competencies in gene profiling approaches applied to complex diseases (1999-2000), and in 2001, obtained a “Avenir” INSERM team before the creation of an INSERM/UPMC called NutriOmics “Nutrition and obesity Systemic approaches”; grouping different expertise (metabolism, nutrition, physiology, bioinformatics). She contributed to more than 250 international publications, reviews and many international conferences in the field (h-Index 61). Her research team showed notably that inflammatory and remodeling genes (i.e. profibrotic genes) in human adipose tissue are modulated by weight variation in parallel to changes in immune cells. The team was the first to demonstrate the accumulation of fibrosis in human adipose tissue. Deeper insights into mechanisms have been undertaken by exploring cross-talks between adipose and stroma-vascular cells (immune and non immune) and between adipocytes/ adipose tissue and muscle cell/ atria. Her research team is exploring the link between environmental changes, systemic changes and functional modifications in the adipose tissue. Many clinical studies are conducted in her group particularly in bariatric surgery model. The gut microbiota is of evidence a key actor of this link. Dr Mercedes de Onis is the Coordinator of the Growth Assessment and Surveillance Unit of the Department of Nutrition at the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva. She has worked at WHO since 1989 when she joined as a Scientist responsible for the technical area of child growth and nutritional surveillance. A graduate of the University Complutense of Medicine in Madrid, Dr de Onis completed training in public health and epidemiology at the School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University from 1984 to 1986. She then joined the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, USA, where she worked as a researcher and wrote her doctoral dissertation on fetal growth retardation. Soon after her arrival at WHO she initiated the work that culminated in the development of the WHO Child Growth Standards, currently used in 130+ countries, and has also developed growth curves for school-aged children and adolescents. Claude Emond, Ph.D., Toxicologist Dr. Claude Emond is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health at the University of Montreal, Canada, and Associate Professor at the Institute of Environmental Sciences (ISE) at the University of Quebec in Montreal (UQAM). In this capacity, Dr. Emond delivers lectures in Toxicology classes at the university and supervises graduate students. He received a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from the University of Montreal in Quebec in 1987, a master’s degree in Environmental Health from the University of Montreal in 1997, and a Ph.D. in Public Health (Toxicology and Human Risk Assessment option) in 2001 from the University of Montreal. From 2001 to 2004, Dr. Emond received grants from the National Research Council, a branch of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), to perform postdoctoral studies for 2½ years at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in North Carolina. At EPA, Dr. Emond’s work focused on describing a developmental physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model on dioxins. His research and consulting interests address problems in toxicology and focus on different chemicals, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxins, flame retardants (polybrominated diphenyl ether [PBDE] and hexabromocyclododecane [HBCD]), bisphenol A, pyrethroid, and xenoestrogens. Dr. Emond’s research interests also focus on the development and the improvement of mathematical PBPK models to address and reduce the uncertainty for toxicology risk assessment in human health. Much of his research activities focus on the toxicokinetic and dynamic effects to further characterize the mode of action between chemicals and biological matrices for individuals or populations. He is also interested in occupational toxicology, mainly on the effects of organic solvents, modeling physiological changes in aging compared to younger workers, and nanotoxicology. Dr. Emond recently served on EPA’s Science Advisory Board Reviewing Committee for Trichloroethylene (TCE). His expertise was recognized and used in the dioxin reassessment by EPA’s National Center for Environmental Assessment. In 2008, Dr. Emond and colleagues founded an international nanotoxicology group called The International Team in Nanotoxicology (www.TITNT.com), which includes collaborators from five different countries. He also recently founded a Delaware-based consulting company called BioSimulation Consulting Inc., which provides services in pharmacokinetics for government by offering analytical data-mining support. He is President of an Endocrine Disruptor Review Work Group for the French Agency for Food, Environmental, and Occupational Health and Safety (ANSES). HeDr. Emond has published many papers and is often invited to present his research at international meetings on persistent organic chemicals and nanotechnology because his work contributes to the improvement of health, safety, and environmental assessment and regulations.

Amandine Garde is Professor of Law at the University of Liverpool. She previously lectured at King’s College London where she obtained her PhD, at the Faculty of Law in Cambridge where she was also a Fellow of Selwyn College, at the University of Exeter and at the University of Durham. Her research interests lie in the fields of EU Internal Market, Consumer, Advertising, Food and Public Health Law. In particular, she has developed an expertise on the legal aspects of obesity prevention and other risk factors for non-communicable diseases such as tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption. Her book EU Law and Obesity Prevention (Kluwer Law International, 2010) is the first to offer a critical analysis of the EU’s Obesity Prevention Strategy, and she is co-editor (with Alberto Alemanno) of Regulating Lifestyle Risks: the EU, Alcohol, Tobacco and Unhealthy Diets(Cambridge University Press, forthcoming, December 2014). As one of the few legal experts on the prevention of non-communicable diseases, she has been invited to take part in a broad range of policy initiatives. Most notably, her work has attracted the attention of the World Health Organization, for whom she has co-authored reports on food marketing to children and has provided a series of training sessions on the role of legal instruments in the prevention of non-communicable diseases. Based on structured interviewing and testing of around 10.000 people and the analysis of psychological assessments prior to bariatric interventions Elisabeth Ardelt-Gattinger and an interdisciplinary team developed and validated a specific Testsystem for Obesity and other illnesses linked to a unhealthy lifestyle (AD-EVA). She has been carrying out a lot of obesity prevention projects and she still works as a researcher and lecturer now. Meaning And Assessment Of Satiety In Childhood

Professor Jason Halford is Head of the Department of Psychological Sciences at the University of Liverpool, former Chair of the UK Association for the Study of Obesity – ASO (www.aso.org.uk), and Treasurer of the European Association of Obesity (EASO). He is a Chartered Health Psychologist. His early research focused on anti-obesity drugs and appetite and this has progressed to the behavioural assessment of potential anti-obesity drugs in early clinical development. Over the past 10 years his research has focused on drug-induced 16 weight gain, the effects of nutrients and fibre on appetite and hormone release, the effects of stress on eating behaviour, the effect of marketing of children, and on lean-obese differences in the expression of appetite. In 1999 he co-founded the Human Ingestive Behaviour Laboratory at Liverpool and in 2004 he also cofounded the Liverpool Obesity Research Network (LORN). Professor Halford is the co-ordinator of the 8 million Euro EU Framework Seven Satiety Innovation SATIN project (www.satin-satiety.eu) to develop novel foods for appetite control using novel processing technologies to alter food structure. He is also a leading scientist on the WRAP trial investigating the role of commercial weight management providers in primary care and the lead investigator on a new trial to examine the impact of artificial sweeteners on appetite in the context of active weight management.

Dr Joanne Harrold is a Senior Lecturer in Appetite and Obesity in the Department of Psychological Sciences, University of Liverpool. She is a behavioural neuroendocrinologist with an interest in the processes involved in food intake and energy balance. Her research covers a broad spectrum of the control of the appetite system from preclinical models through to man. Her early research characterised the homeostatic and hedonic control systems within the brain before progressing to examine pharmacological, dietary and psychological manipulations of human eating behaviour. She has carried out a number of weight management interventions. Recently, her research has focused on early eating experiences and the development of dietary behaviour. She is Director of the Human Ingestive Behaviour Laboratory where she established an Infant feeding laboratory. Prenatal Experience And Childhood Obesity

Dr Jenna Hollis is a postdoctoral researcher at the Rowett Institute of Nutrition and Health and University of Aberdeen in Scotland. Jenna has worked in research for 7 years and is passionate about obesity prevention, public health nutrition, and women’s and children’s health. She graduated from the University of Newcastle (Australia) with a Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics (Honours I) in 2009, and a PhD in Nutrition and Dietetics in July 2014. Her PhD examined the effectiveness of a 12-month health professional-led intervention on dietary and physical activity behaviour change to prevent weight gain in mid-age Australian women. Prior to relocating to the United Kingdom, Jenna carried out research at the University of Newcastle, University of Canberra and Hunter New England Local Health District Population Health Unit (Australia) across numerous nutrition and physical activity studies including the 40-Something Study, Physical Activity for Everyone (PA4E1) RCT, SHED-IT, and the Healthy Habits RCT. She has undertaken additional training in biostatistics and epidemiology. Jenna has presented her research at both international and national conferences, and has 6 peer reviewed papers and a further 2 under-review. After completing her PhD, Jenna moved to Scotland in October 2014 to join the Rowett Institute of Nutrition and Health as a Research Fellow with the Public Health Nutrition Research Group. Her position is funded by the Rural and Environment Science and Analytical Services Division (RESAS) programme of the Scottish Government. Her research focuses on i) evaluating simplified methods of monitoring the progress of the diet of the population towards healthy eating targets such as the Eatwell Plate, and ii) assesses the relationships between diet, food availability and affordability using the Kantar Worldpanel Survey of household food purchases across Scotland. Jenna recently obtained an Endeavour Research Fellowship, funded by the Australian Government, to investigate the dietary and lifestyle predictors of maternal and child health and the developmental origins of health and disease in cohorts of women and children from the United Kingdom and Australia. She will commence the fellowship in November 2015 at the MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit at the University of Southampton.

Claude Marcel HLADIK (born in Paris in 1936) has, for about 30 years, been conducting field studies on the diet of wild primates — lemurs, monkeys and apes — analysing the composition of available foods in the natural setting of 38 primate species. He has been a research fellow of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, a senior research scientist at the CNRS in France, and, in 1998, was nominated Professor at the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, where his wife, Annette Hladik, is conducting botanical studies on plant species and foods available to primates in tropical forests. In the research results they have published together, they have emphasized the evolutionary importance of tubers of wild yams (Dioscorea spp.), because the energy available in the non-toxic and abundant forest yam species is probably the key factor that allowed the development of a large brain in Homo species.

Sylvie Issanchou, PhD is a Research Director at INRA (French National Institute of Agricultural Research), in the Centre des Sciences du Goût et de l’Alimentation (Center for Taste and Feeding Behaviour), in Dijon, France. She is particularly interested by the impact of the sensory factors on food liking. She is responsible of a multidisciplinary research group working on the development and the dynamics of food preferences and eating behaviour. This group focuses its research on the factors determining human eating behaviour all along the life course with a particular attention on the early years and on the learning mechanisms. She is the author of about 100 scientific papers in international refereed journals, 17 book chapters and participated in over 150 communications in international or national conferences. Min Ji Kim studied, during her PhD, the adipose tissue dysfunctions in obesity and antiretroviral therapy-induced lipodystrophies at the University of Paris 6 and at INSERM. These diseases shares some common features among which the low-grade adipose tissue inflammation. During her postdoctoral fellowship at INSERM U747, she studied and determined the pro-inflammatory effects of pollutants which explain a possible contribution of pollutants in the pathogenesis of metabolic diseases. He is Professor since 2005 in food safety at the National Veterinary College of Nantes, Oniris. Professor Le Bizec is at this time the Head of the French National Reference Laboratory LABERCA in charge of forbidden growth promoters in farm animals and a wide of persistent organic pollutants in food. He was appointed Vice-Chair of the Contaminant panel of the French Agency for Food Safety (ANSES) from 2006-2012, Professor Le Bizec is also serving as a member on a FAO/WHO expert committee on food additives (JECFA) since 2008 and in IARC (PCB monography, 2013). He has been repeatedly invited as a national expert for FVO (Food and Veterinary Offices, EU DG SANCO) inspection in member states and third countries. Tim Lobstein is Policy Director for the World Obesity Federation based in London, UK, and Adjunct Professor at the Public Health Advocacy Institute of Western Australia, Curtin University, Perth. Dr Lobstein is an occasional consultant to the World Health Organization, the European Commission, the UK government’s Public Health England and various other authorities and non-governmental organisations internationally. He is the author of chapters on food policy and obesity in international text books, the author or co-author of more than 50 papers in peer-reviewed journals, and the author of several popular books on food and nutrition. Dr Lobstein has special interests in child obesity, on marketing food and beverages to children, on nutrition policies and programmes, and on health inequalities and income disparities. He has been Principal Investigator on two European Commission-funded projects on food policy and child health, an advisor on two further EC-funded projects on obesity policies, and a Work-package Leader on six EC-funded projects related to nutrition, obesity prevention and treatment, and health impact assessment. Dr Lobstein has extensive experience in policy analysis, policy dissemination, evidence reviews and advocacy.

Ellen Moens graduated in July 1999 as a Clinical Psychologist at Ghent University (Ghent, Belgium). Since October 1999, she was working at the Department of Developmental, Personality and Social Psychology (Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences, Ghent University). In May 2008 she successfully defended her PhD dissertation entitled “Towards a better understanding of parental influences on childhood obesity” (promoted by Prof. Dr. Caroline Braet). Since October 2008 she is working as a postdoctoral researcher at the same department. In October 2009 she was granted a post-doctoral research mandate by the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO) on eating behaviour of young children. Next to her research tasks she is teaching practical courses at Psychology-students on the assessment and treatment of obesity and internalizing problems and as a behavioural therapist she is also a member of Ghent University Child Mental Health Centre.

Sophie Nicklaus, PhD is a Research Director at INRA (French National Institute of Agricultural Research), in the Centre des Sciences du Goût et de l’Alimentation (Center for Taste and Feeding Behaviour), in Dijon, France. She received her PhD in Food Science from the University of Burgundy. She has been studying children’s eating behaviour for the past 15 years, looking at the role of food-related inputs (sensory properties, energy density) in the development and evolution of infants and children’s liking and food intake, using experimental and epidemiological approaches. She is in particular interested in understanding the impact of early eating experiences on later behaviour. She participated in the EU-funded HabEat project, coordinates the OPALINE birth cohort (Observatory of food preferences in infants and children), and participates in the « feeding » group of the ELFE birth cohort (French Longitudinal Study since infancy), where she leads the analysis of complementary feeding data. Professor Valerio Nobili was an Italian physician, professor, and researcher internationally recognized in the field of paediatric hepatology. He worked for more than twenty years at Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital in Rome, where he served as Head of the Unit of Hepatology, Gastroenterology, and Nutrition. From 2013, he was Associate Professor of Paediatrics at Sapienza University of Rome. His scientific activity focused mainly on paediatric liver diseases and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), an area in which he contributed with more than 250 scientific publications and became recognized as one of the leading international experts in the field. He passed away in 2019, leaving a lasting scientific and professional legacy. Dr. Grace O’Malley, Dr. Grace O’Malley, is a Senior Lecturer at RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences and PI of the RCSI Obesity Research and Care Group. She is a Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist in Paediatric Endocrinology at Children's Health Ireland where she works as Clinical Lead of the CHI Child and Adolescent Complex Obesity Service- an EASO paediatric COM. She completed a PhD in Epidemiology and Public Health at University College Cork. This work focused on the design, implementation and evaluation of multi-disciplinary interventions for adolescent obesity. She received a 2008 Fulbright award to Yale University School of Medicine, where she undertook clinical research into the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes in children who are obese. She graduated with a BSc Physiotherapy in 2004 and MSc 2006 from the University of Dublin, Trinity College. Her clinical interests include: paediatric obesity assessment, treatment strategies and the impact of obesity on the health of the developing child.  Research interests include the effect of obesity on the musculoskeletal health of the child and the use of web 2.0 technologies to optimise care of children who are obese. She is the elected Irish representative of the European Childhood Obesity Group and the European Childhood Obesity Task Force and Chairs the Association for the Study of Obesity on the Island of Ireland. Research and Mentoring Thus far in my clinical research career I have established a consistent publication record in the fields of obesity and diabetes, with over 75 publications to date. In recent times my research group has published articles on the immune effects that the above conditions elicit. I have now supervised 4 clinicians (Dr’s Khatib, Abusnana, Cawood and O’Connell) to completion of their PhD and 1 to completion of his MD (Dr Bashir). I have 4 clinicians registered for their PhD (Dr’s Woods, Ahern, Gaoawste and Carolan) and 2 for an MD (Dr’s Kattak & Armin). Dr Eirin Carolan and her successor Dr Meenal Mavinkurve, have undertaken research paediatric obesity research projects in collaboration with Dr Declan Cody of Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital. With Dr Brian Kirby, I have co-supervised a dermatologist (Dr Anne Marie Tobin) for her PhD and with Prof Walter Mc Nicholas, I am co-supervising Dr Brian Kent for his PhD. Both attended and presented their experimental/trial plans at our weekly meeting. I have supervised two dietitians in our unit to completion of their Masters (Alison Quinn and Lorraine Cooney). I am especially pleased that another of our dietitians, Cathy Breen, has taken time out to undertake a PhD. She has completed her PhD transfer and is in the final year of her studies and had 3 publications based on her PhD project. Dr. Pénicaud is Research Director at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) since 1989. From 1995 to 2007, Dr. Pénicaud was director of a CNRS unit affiliated to the University of Toulouse. Earlier, Dr. Pénicaud held a CNRS position in the Laboratory of Nutrition at the University of Paris VI as a team leader. He earned his PhD. from the University of Paris VI and VII, and completed postdoctoral studies at the University of Rochester NY, USA; the University Medical Center, Geneva, Switzerland, and the Nutrition Center, Paris. He is now since 2010 the Director of the Center for the Study of Taste and Feeding Behavior in Dijon, a Centre of over 220 members affiliated to CNRS, INRA and University of Burgundy. He is the recipient of several awards for his research in neurobiology, energy homeostasis and associated pathologies such as diabetes and obesity. Dr. Pénicaud is a member of several international societies such as the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), the American Diabetes Association ADA), the European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO), the European and International Society of Neuroscience. Dr Pénicaud is member of different boards: among which President of the scientific commission on Physiology at the CNRS, Scientific council at the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA), Scientific council of the Nutrition department at the same Institute, commission of the National Program on Diabetes. Iris Pigeot is Professor of Statistics focused on Biometry and Methods in Epidemiology at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Bremen since 2001. She is Director of the Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology – BIPS, and head of the Department of Biometry and Data Management. Her research activities focus on bioequivalence studies, graphical models, and genetic epidemiology. In recent years, she has widened the spectrum of her research to include the use of secondary data in the research of pharmaceutical drug safety as well as primary prevention and its evaluation, especially for childhood obesity. She received several teaching awards: the “Medal for Excellent Teaching” at the University of Dortmund in 1994, the “Award for Quality Teaching” at the University of Munich in 1996, and the “Berninghausen Award for Excellent Teaching and its Innovation” at the University of Bremen in 2008. In 2010, the IBS-DR awarded her the Susanne-Dahms medal for special accomplishments in the field of biometry. Prenatal Experience And Childhood Obesity

Siân Robinson is Professor of Nutritional Epidemiology at the MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit at the University of Southampton, UK. Her research addresses the contribution of nutrition across the lifecourse to inequalities in adult health, with a particular focus on early life influences on growth, development and later function, and effects on sarcopenia and ageing. Her main interests are in body composition in childhood and in older adults, in understanding how normal variations in dietary behaviour impact on these outcomes, and the extent to which nutrition in early life conditions adult responsiveness to diet and lifestyle. She is responsible for the nutritional components of the large UK cohorts run by the MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit and is a Research Area Lead for the NIHR Southampton Biomedical Research Centre.

Metabolic Programming, Breastfeeding And Later Risk Of Obesity

Piotr Socha is a Head of the Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition Disorders Ward in The Children’s Memorial Health Institute in Warsaw. His research and clinical work were devided into two streams- nutrition and liver. He described nutritional problems in cholestatic liver disease-eg. he developed the concept of TPGS (water soluble vitamin) therapy, indicated the risks and causes of LCPUFA deficiency. His research concentrated also on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease with critical approach to therapy. His clinical experience with rare diseases brought to scientific contribution in research on Wilson disease and newly described PGM-1 as a defect of glycosylation. Most of the recent research work was devoted to obesity prevention and therapy and feeding disorders became one of the major clinical interests. Piotr Socha was the chair of the Hepatology Committee of ESPGHAN (2010-2013). He was awarded with John Harries Prize by ESPGHAN in 1995. Piotr Socha contributs/contributed to 7 EU projects (CHOP, EUROWILSON, EARNEST, PERFECT, NUTRIMENTHE, TOYBOX, EARLY NUTRITION). He is the president of the Polish Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition. He published over 250 peer reviewed papers and contributed to 26 books. He is the Associated Editor of the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition. The major research interests at present are childhood obesity and its complications (mainly non-alcoholic fatty liver disease), feeding disorders, immune deficiencies causing severe inflammatory bowel disease, Wilson’s disease, congenital defects of glycosylation and gene modifiers in those frequent and rare diseases.

Currently she works as Head of the Department of Paediatrics, Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes at the Medical University of Silesia. This department is EASO accredited Collaborating Centre for Obesity Management (COM). Since 1993 she is a member of Polish Society for Paediatric Endocrinology. From 2005 to 2009 has been serving in the capacity of President of this Society. She is a member of ESPE since 1996 and she was appointed its POC member. She was also a POC member of EFES/ECE in Gothenburg, Istanbul and Glasgow, of the European Congress of Obesity in Geneva and ICE in Rio de Janeiro. She was an invited speaker of symposia, MTE and Pro and Cons sessions at several international meetings and workshops and was also a lecturer at ESE Postgraduate Training Courses in Clinical Endocrinology. In 2010 she was nominated a Jury Member of EJE prize. Prof. Ewa Malecka-Tendera is also active in the field of childhood obesity. Since 1992 has been a member of the European Childhood Obesity Group (ECOG). Between 1997 and 2003 she was a Scientific Advisor of the board of ECOG. Sandra VerbekenSandra Verbeken graduated in July 2006 as a Clinical Psychologist at Ghent University (Ghent, Belgium). From October 2006 until November 2012, she was working as a PhD student at the Department of Developmental, Personality and Social Psychology (Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences, Ghent University). In November 2012 she successfully defended her PhD dissertation entitled “Resisting food temptation: Influence of context, impulsivity and coping” (promoted by Prof. Dr. Caroline Braet and funded by Special Research Funds, Ghent University). Since December 2012 she is working as a postdoctoral researcher at the same department on a postdoctoral Strategic Basic Research project entitled “Rewarding Healthy Food Choices”. Michel Vermorel is engineer in Agronomics (National Agronomy Institute, 1962 Paris) and has a MSc degree in Nutrition Physiology (University of Paris la Sorbonne, 1963). He is emeritus research director of the French National Institute for agricultural Research. During 30 years his research first on energy metabolism and nutrition of farm animals (149 indexed scientific publications). Then he shifted to the study of energy metabolism and nutrition in adolescents (healthy, obese and top athletes) at the Auvergne Nutrition Research Center (Clermont Ferrand, France) where he published 47 indexed scientific publications. He was Research Director of 12 PhD.

Kyriakou”, Athens, Greece Dr. Elpis-Athina Vlachopapadopoulou, received the MD degree from the University of Athens, Greece with “magna cum laude” in 1986. Following completion of Pediatric Residency at St. Luke’s/ Roosevelt Hospital Center of the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons campus (1990) she proceeded to a Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship at New York Hospital- Cornell Medical Center in NYC (1990-94). She became Board Certified in both Pediatrics 1990 and Pediatric Endocrinolgy, 1997. She returned to Athens, Greece in 1994 and she is working in Children’s Hospital “P. & A. Kyriakou”, Dept. of Growth and Development-Endocrinology since 1997, currently as Director. She holds Greek Boards in Pediatrics and also Endocrinology. Dr Vlachopapadopoulou is a member of the Endocrine Society since 1994, of the European Society of Pediatric Endocrinology since 1997 and of the European Society of Endocrinology since 2006. She is actively participating in international meetings with more than 100 presentations, as well as, several in Greek symposia and meetings. Her main research interests focus on growth disorders, growth hormone deficiency, precocious puberty, obesity and long-term endocrine sequelae following treatment for childhood malignancies and bone marrow transplantation. She has authored 30 publications in peer-reviewed international and Greek journals, as well as book chapters. She has been a reviewer for journals, ESPE and ECOG meetings, as well as, national journals and meetings. She is the principal investigator in three Phase –II international protocols and co-investigator in four international observational studies. She is very active in the field of childhood obesity. Since 2003, has been a member of the European Childhood Obesity Group. She follows and offers treatment plan to more than 600/year overweight –obese children. She is leading investigator for the Hellenic National ActionPlan for the Assessment Prevention and Treatment for Childhood Obesity in Greece with important research and field interventions among children and adolescents relating to obesity in Greece.

Daniel Weghuber, MD, is an alumni of Vienna Medical School. He is Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Paracelsus Medical School (PMU) in Salzburg, Austria. Clinically, he works as a consultant at the Department of Pediatrics, heading the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition and the Obesity Research Unit at PMU, focusing on metabolic comorbidities including glucose and fat metabolism (in particular disturbed insulin sensitivity and secretion) and phenotypes of preclinical atherosclerosis. Dr Agnieszka Zachurzok, MD, PhD Department of Paediatrics, Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes Medical University of Silesia, Katowice, Poland Prof Agnieszka Zachurzok, MD, PhD graduated from Medical University of Silesia in 2002 and in 2003 she also graduated from the one-year course of molecular biology at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. In 2019, she completed one month research training at the Ulm University Hospital, Germany. She is specialist in Paediatrics, Endocrinology, and Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes. In 2004 she received the Ph.D. degree for a thesis: “Ovarian hyperandrogenism in adolescent girls with menstrual disorders”. Since 2003 she has been working at the Medical University of Silesia. At present, she is a professor at the Department of Paediatrics, Faculty of Medical Sciences in Zabrze, Medical University of Silesia, Katowice, Poland and the head of the Department of Paediatric Endocrinology at the University Hospital in Zabrze. Prof Zachurzok is involved in clinical work, research and teaching. She is especially interested in obesity, metabolic syndrome and polycystic ovary syndrome. Since 2016 she is involved in the project “Early-onset obesity and leptin - German-Polish study”, initially as an investigator, since 2019 as a Polish coordinator, and from 2022 as a project manager and a head of the multicenter grant of Polish National Science Centre “Prevalence of monogenic obesity among Polish children and adolescents with severe obesity – biochemical and genetic study of leptin-proopiomelanocortin pathway – Polish-German Study”. She was a partner in EU project “BOYS AND GIRLS”. Dr Zachurzok is a co-author of 95 papers in pediatrics and pediatric endocrinology published in peer-reviewed medical journals, her current IF is 93.1. She is a member of European Society for Pediatric Endocrinology (ESPE), Polish Society of Paediatric Obesity, Polish Endocrine Society and Polish Society of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes.
